How Do Rent2Buy Van Payments Work?
Rent2Buy uses a different payment structure from conventional van finance.
Rather than taking out a loan to purchase the vehicle, you rent the van for an agreed period and make three main types of payment:
• An initial rental before collection
• Agreed monthly rentals throughout the term
• An optional final purchase payment of £99 plus VAT
Understanding each stage will help you know what you are paying, when payments are due and when ownership of the van may transfer to you.
Rent2Buy Payment Structure at a Glance
The initial and monthly rental amounts vary by vehicle. The figures shown for your chosen van should be checked before you apply.
1. The Initial Rental
The initial rental is the upfront amount due before you collect the van and begin the agreement.
It is a rental payment rather than a vehicle deposit or ownership payment.
The amount can vary depending on the vehicle and the particular Rent2Buy agreement. It should be clearly shown on the vehicle advert or explained before you proceed.
Paying the initial rental does not make you the legal owner of the van. Rent2Buy Vans continues to own the vehicle throughout the rental term.
Before paying, make sure you understand:
• The amount of the initial rental
• When it must be paid
• The agreed monthly rental
• The length of the agreement
• Any mileage or vehicle-use conditions
• What happens if the agreement does not proceed
You should not assume the initial rental is refundable unless this is specifically confirmed in your agreement.
2. The Monthly Rentals
After the initial rental, you make the agreed monthly rental payments for the duration of the contract.
Rent2Buy agreements normally run for between 36 and 48 months, although the exact term will be shown in your individual agreement.
The monthly payments are rental payments for the use of the vehicle. They are not loan repayments and do not gradually transfer ownership of the van to you.
Throughout the rental period, Rent2Buy Vans remains the legal owner.
Your agreement should clearly state:
• The monthly rental amount
• The payment date
• The total number of monthly rentals
• The agreement term
• The mileage allowance
• Any excess-mileage charges
• Vehicle condition and maintenance requirements
• What happens if a payment is missed
You should consider the monthly rental alongside your other business and personal commitments before entering the agreement.
Rent2Buy does not carry out a credit check, but it still reviews whether the monthly rental appears affordable based on the information and documents provided.
3. The Final Purchase Option
Once all required monthly rentals and agreement conditions have been completed, you have the option to purchase the van.
The current final purchase payment is:
£99 plus VAT
This payment is separate from the monthly rentals.
Ownership does not transfer automatically simply because the rental term has ended. You must successfully complete the agreement and pay the final £99 plus VAT purchase amount before ownership can pass to you.
Until the final purchase option has been exercised and completed, the vehicle remains owned by Rent2Buy Vans.
The agreement documents should explain the exact completion process and any requirements that must be satisfied before ownership transfers.
Is the Final £99 Plus VAT Payment Compulsory?
The £99 plus VAT payment is the final purchase option.
It is payable when you choose to purchase the vehicle after successfully completing the Rent2Buy agreement.
You should not assume that the vehicle can automatically be returned, exchanged or upgraded at the end of the term unless your particular agreement specifically allows this.
Any alternative end-of-agreement arrangement would need to be discussed and agreed with Rent2Buy Vans.
Example of the Payment Journey
A typical Rent2Buy payment journey may look like this:
1. You select an available Rent2Buy van.
2. Your eligibility, documents and affordability are assessed.
3. You review and accept the agreement terms.
4. You pay the stated initial rental.
5. You arrange fully comprehensive insurance.
6. You collect the vehicle from Southampton.
7. You make the agreed monthly rentals throughout the contract.
8. You comply with the mileage, payment and vehicle-use conditions.
9. After successfully completing the agreement, you pay the final £99 plus VAT purchase amount.
10. Ownership of the van can then transfer to you.
The exact dates and amounts will depend on the vehicle and your individual agreement.
Does the Initial Rental Count Towards the Final Purchase Payment?
No.
The initial rental is the first rental payment required to begin the agreement. It is separate from the £99 plus VAT final purchase option.
It should not be treated as a deposit towards ownership unless your written agreement expressly states otherwise.
Do the Monthly Rentals Build Equity in the Van?
No.
The monthly payments allow you to rent and use the vehicle during the agreement.
They do not give you a growing ownership share in the van. Rent2Buy Vans remains the legal owner until the agreement is completed and the final purchase option has been paid.
Are the Payment Amounts the Same for Every Van?
No.
The initial rental and monthly rental amounts vary between vehicles.
Payment figures may depend on factors such as:
• The vehicle
• Its age and specification
• The agreed term
• The individual Rent2Buy offer
• Current vehicle availability
Always check the actual figures shown for the particular van you are considering.
Are There Any Other Costs?
The initial rental, monthly rentals and final purchase payment are not necessarily the only costs involved.
You may also need to budget for:
• Fully comprehensive insurance
• Fuel
• Servicing and maintenance
• Repairs not covered by any applicable warranty
• Roadside assistance where not included
• Excess-mileage charges
• Charges relating to damage or breaches of the agreement
• VAT where applicable
The agreement should explain which costs are your responsibility.
Insurance Requirements
Insurance is not included in the Rent2Buy monthly rental.
Before collecting the vehicle, you must arrange suitable fully comprehensive insurance in your own name or your company’s name.
The insurance must meet the requirements stated in the agreement and remain in place throughout the rental term.
Mileage and Vehicle-Use Conditions
Rent2Buy agreements include mileage and vehicle-use conditions.
You should check:
• The monthly or annual mileage allowance
• The charge for exceeding that allowance
• Who is permitted to drive the van
• Maintenance responsibilities
• Vehicle-condition requirements
• Any restrictions on how the vehicle may be used
Additional charges may apply where the mileage limit is exceeded or the agreement conditions are not followed.
What Happens if a Monthly Rental Is Missed?
Missing a payment may place the agreement in arrears and could lead to further action under the contract.
Depending on the circumstances and agreement terms, this could include:
• Contact from the account team
• Additional charges
• Restrictions on the agreement
• Recovery of the vehicle
• Termination of the contract
You should contact Rent2Buy Vans as soon as possible if you believe you may have difficulty making a payment.
