Rent2Buy vs Van Finance: What Is the Difference?

Rent2Buy and van finance can both help a business obtain a van, but they work in different ways.

Rent2Buy is a rental-to-ownership agreement operated by Vansco Limited. Traditional van finance is a lender-based borrowing arrangement, such as hire purchase, where approval and terms depend on the finance provider.

Neither option is automatically better for every customer.

What Is Rent2Buy?

With Rent2Buy:

• The customer rents the van under an agreement.

• Vansco Limited owns the vehicle during the term.

• The customer makes the agreed monthly payments.

• The customer is responsible for insurance, servicing and maintenance.

• Vehicle tax is included while the agreement remains active.

• Ownership can transfer only after the agreement and final purchase requirements are completed.

Rent2Buy does not use a traditional credit check, but affordability, identity, documents, location and eligibility are still assessed.

What Is Traditional Van Finance?

Traditional van finance normally involves an application to a lender.

Depending on the product, the lender may consider:

• Credit history

• Affordability

• Income or business information

• Deposit

• Vehicle age and value

• Agreement term

• Existing financial commitments

The customer signs a finance agreement and makes payments according to the lender’s terms.

With hire purchase, ownership normally transfers only after all required payments and any option-to-purchase fee have been completed.

How Do the Checks Differ?

Rent2Buy

Rent2Buy does not use a traditional credit check. The assessment normally uses:

• Recent bank statements

• Proofs of address

• Driving licence

• Income and commitments

• Residential location

• Overall affordability and eligibility

No traditional credit check does not mean no assessment or guaranteed acceptance.

Van finance

A lender normally carries out a credit check and affordability assessment. Approval, deposit, rate and term depend on the lender’s criteria and the customer’s circumstances.

Who Owns the Van?

During Rent2Buy

Vansco Limited owns the van during the active agreement.

During hire purchase

The finance company normally has an interest in the vehicle until the agreement is completed.

At the end

Under either route, the customer should not assume ownership until every required payment, fee and condition has been completed.

Is There a Deposit?

Rent2Buy normally uses an initial rental and a separate £200 vehicle reservation stage.

Van finance may require a deposit. The amount varies according to the lender, vehicle and application. A low advertised deposit is not guaranteed on every case.

What About the Monthly Payments?

Rent2Buy monthly payments are based on the selected van and agreement structure, within the customer’s assessed affordable range.

Finance payments depend on factors such as:

• Vehicle price

• Deposit

• Amount financed

• Term

• Interest rate

• Lender conditions

• Any final or option-to-purchase payment

Customers should compare the total agreement cost, not only the monthly figure.

Is There a Location Restriction?

Rent2Buy applicants normally need to live within approximately 100 miles of Southampton. Vehicles are collected from the Southampton and Cadnam area, and delivery is not included.

Van finance is generally available across a wider geographic area, subject to the lender, dealer and vehicle arrangements. Van Finance Company’s finance service is UK-wide subject to its operating areas and lender availability.

Is There a Mileage Allowance?

Rent2Buy normally includes 3,000 miles per month. Mileage above that level is charged at 20p plus VAT per mile.

Ordinary hire purchase does not normally have the same contractual monthly mileage allowance, although mileage still affects vehicle condition and value.

Other finance or lease products may contain mileage limits, so the agreement must be checked carefully.

Who Pays for Insurance and Maintenance?

Rent2Buy

The customer arranges full annual comprehensive insurance and is responsible for ongoing servicing, maintenance and repairs outside warranty.

Vehicle tax is included during the active agreement.

Van finance

The customer normally pays for insurance, tax, servicing and maintenance. The exact responsibilities depend on the product and any separate maintenance package.

Can the Van Be Changed or Returned?

Rent2Buy may allow a return with the required notice and may permit an exchange subject to timing, payment history, vehicle condition, affordability and available stock.

Finance agreements have their own early-settlement and termination rules. Returning a financed van does not automatically cancel the debt, and customers must follow the lender’s process.

Who May Rent2Buy Suit?

Rent2Buy may be considered by customers who:

• Do not fit ordinary finance criteria

• Can demonstrate affordability through documents

• Live within the normal operating area

• Can collect from Southampton or Cadnam

• Understand the maintenance and mileage responsibilities

• Want a route towards ownership without a traditional credit check

Acceptance is never guaranteed.

Who May Van Finance Suit?

Van finance may suit customers who:

• Meet lender criteria

• Are comfortable with a credit check

• Want access to a wider vehicle or geographic choice

• Prefer a conventional finance product

• Receive suitable terms from a lender

The rate, deposit and approval depend on the application.
